When I finished reading all the ASoIaF books available, and I read the first four in a line, I felt very much like an addict needing another dose, so to speak. I tried to find some other book that gave me something similar, to some extent, and Abercrombie's 'First Law' trilogy was my choice. It's not like ASoIaF,it's different but it's damn good fantasy for adults, dark, gritty, well-written and highly addictive. Each book is better than the last, they get better and better.
I won't say these books are similar to ASoIaF because they have their own style but I think most people who like ASoIaF will enjoy them.
There's another reason you may like Joe's books, Caul Shivers, a tall long-haired warrior with a life of violence whose wish to choose a better life and become a good man is stronger than his need for revenge. His is a heart-wrenching trip where he does everything to have a chance at a better life but is drawn to violence again without escape. What happens to him and the man himself are usually compared to Sandor Clegane. His struggle to leave violence behind appears in 'Best Served Cold', whose main female character is very much what Arya will become if she keeps being obsessed with revenge. These books are great but they are really dark and gritty and somewhat nihilistic or so I thought until I read 'Red Country' and 'The Heroes', cause in those there was hope and a bittersweet taste.
Shivers is the kind of scary guy that gives you the chills and it's harder when you know he is, or at least was, basically good. I loved him and hated him at times but still hope he may find light at the end of the tunnel. You can follow his character development throughout several books from hopeful youth to mostly silent, threatening, really dangerous thug. I'm telling you this because you may like another dose of dark fantasy with memorable characters and very well-written action scenes. Shivers is just one character among many and not the main one but he's fascinating enough for the author to bring him back in several books.
He does things you will hate him for but I, for one, feel sorry for the young man he once was and the good man he wanted to be. Does this sound familiar?
