What about Rey's family? Do you think she is a Skywalker, a Kenobi or just a ramdom girl who happens to be the chosen one because she has the qualities needed for that? The saber chose her ( Arthurian style) over Kylo for a reason. Is this because it beloged to Luke and she is related to him more than Kylo is or perhaps the sabre belonged to Obi Wan because he beat Vader and thus became its owner until he gave it to Luke? In HP the wand Voldemort wants to posses only obeys its owner, the one who won it in combat.
I'd like Rey to be no one because I think there's too much determined by lineage in this saga and I'd like someone chosen by her own merits alone. However, I tend to think she will be a Kenobi because the audience will find that cooler and it'd add a bit of the surprise component they probabaly seek instead of going for the overused option that she is another Skywalker.
They have established a parallelism between her and Kylo from the beginning, both of them make their first appearance with their faces hidden behind masks and they both end the movie with the prospect of being trained by great masters, one embracing light and the other complete darkness. These two are indisolubly linked by something apparently mystic and their bond will only break when one of them dies, I think this is what awaits them.
When Kylo carried her to her ships as if she was his bride, it looked like a sort of ritual bride kidnapping although it was nothing of the sort. It later became clear he wanted to keep her by his side whereas she understandsbly wanted to escape and eventually tried to kill him. She hesitated though, she had him defeated at her feet and let the chance to off him slip, knowing well that he deserved it and also that he'd be dangerous for her and for the Resistance if he survived. Their dynamics is very interesting and making them family would be less dramatic than if they were unrelated. Their antagonism will last for the whole saga, IMH, and they will become each other's nemesis while they live. What can be more intimate than an opponent of equal power you are inextricably bonded with?
But why choosing two antagonists who are not only dark/evil versus light/goodness but also similar ages and opposite sexes? I think there'll exploit the sexual chemistry between the pair and the casting seems to suggest this is the case. There weren't many hints that suggested the potential romance or attraction component, though, as far as I noticed, but this is more a clue that something will happen between them than plenty of scenes in that direction. I mean, if the characters are going to interact in several movies and are meant to have some sort of "romantic" relatonship, they don't usually take to each other from the beginning, like Rey and Finn. They don't usually do this in movies. I only noticed Kylo's extreme interest in her, an interest tha made him neglect his other 'duties', which Snoke and Hux didn' t fail to notice. There was also they way he carried her in his arms, although the hint was subtle because when he caught her as she fell unconscious the scene moved very fast to the next and then we saw her carrying her from afar, like Finn and the others. Was this about Finn's angst at how a bad guy kidnapped his girl or about Finn looking at a possible rival? It can be read in both directions. Another hint is how he takes off his mask for the first time and he chooses for her to see him. He did that for nobody else, apart from Han( who demanded that), Snoke and Hux. Moreover, the director chose the moment to show his face and he chose his moment with Rey whereas waiting until he confronted Han would have been much more powerful, as many have pointed out. So if they decided he wouldn't wait until that haunting confrontation with his father,it is because Rey x Ren will happen one way or another.
As I've been told,in some theatres people laughed when Kylo took off his masks, some say that this is because he is ugly but I don't think this was the reason. This is like what happens with the prince in Beauty and the Beasts movie, you feel disappointed when you see his face becaus nothing ever reaches our expectations. When you have to wait to see a face you feel the need to be in awe, in shock, something dramatica, not a normal human face, like everybody else's. A beauty after a veil is never pretty enough to cover one's expectations, and a villain is never striking enough, unless they are disfigured or look monstruous. Normality is anticlimatic, I think.
What's more, they did it romantic movie style,so you expect either a monster o an incredible heart throb. If you already know you are going to see Ryan Gosling's face, for instance, you know what to expect, so even if his face is not perfect, you tend to find him attractive, because in general, he is. Adam Driver looks very unusual and you get to like his looks better the longer you look at him, so finding him either plain, too young or too normal is what happened to many people. I don't think this would have happened if he had behaved in a menacing way, furrowing his brow and looking mean, or if he had had some stubble or his typical goatee. He'd look more like a villain and for many this would do better. Making him look baby faced and gentle was unexpected and for some anticlimatic. I like what they did, I guess they did it on purpose, but I would have loved to see his face for the first time when he confronted Han. There his young face was the perfect counterpart for his father's lined and tired one. They looked great against each other and discovering that "baby face" just then would have felt shocking, but in just the right way. Someone baby faced but so tall and so dangerous was really something to see, really befitting for that scene. Han had never seen his son as a man, looking on his face must have been a really powerful experience from the emotional point of view and the viewer would feel the impact at the same time as him.It it was my decission I'd have waiting until that moment.
If they decided the audience should discover his face at the same time as Rey, it's because the director found this discovery really important for Ray and his decision to unmask for her very important for him. This must have been undoubtedly meaningful for both then, the future will tell why.
What else did I notice hinting at a possible future "romance"? How he didn't want to lose her at took great lenghts to find her several times, how she say him in her childhood memories and apparently he saved her. They were both adults in the images so she must have seen something in her future,I guess. Also the fight, the duel, something like Duel in The Sun with Gregory Peck. A couple who fought until one of them or both died. He seemed drawn to her, very powerfully and he wanted her to join him, not to kill. She showed real hatred towards him, understandably. She didn't kill him, though, when he had the chance.
I saw attraction in him, he will fall for her really hard, but her? She hates him, she probably hates him more than anyone in the world. Anyway, there's a thin line between love and hate, and I tend to think she will feel the attraction two, that it's something that's above them, like what they felt in the interrogation scene. The scrip says they felt something for a moment and then it was gone and they were adversaries again. They felt the force flowing through both of them,he could read her mind and she could read his,but not just like they can read anyone's mind, I guess this is due to the link they share.
Did you notice that he should have been looking for the map but he started talking about her feelings? He noticed her loneliness and fear, and then she felt his fear not to be powerful enough, not like Vader. She entered his feelings instead of his intentions or any other sort of information. So I think they'll be emotionally joined somehow and as good stories need romance, theirs will be the one, a tragic one is what I can imagine, but really powerful and compelling if done well.
