So, I recently reread Jon's first chapter, and I'm going to say something that is likely very, very unpopular:
This chapter makes me think those Tyrion as a Targaryean theories may be right.
Without going into the "all dwarfs are bastards" and the green eye/black eye, half-man descriptions, if he is a bastard, it means that in this chapter, Jon talks to both of his uncles after he feels abandoned by the rest of his family. Benjen advises Jon against taking the black until he's grown a bit. Tyrion tells him to use his bastard status as armor.
Benjen is of the Wall=Ice
Tyrion is of the South=Fire
Jon's parents are dead, but you have the two sides represented by his uncles, looking after him. I don't have much to say about it except that after reading this chapter, seeing how Benjen and Tyrion play similar roles to Jon, I could see it. I get why people don't like the theory, but I'm beginning to think it might be true.

I'm not sure why people hate this theory so much; it seems to me like Tyrion is being built up as a tragic anti-hero, and this would fit in perfectly with that. I agree, the clues are numerous, and -- much like SanSan -- just because you don't LIKE a theory doesn't mean you get to ignore the pile of evidence, LOL.
From what I understand, the theory states that Tyrion is the product of King Aerys knocking up Joanna. I know people hate this because they think it negates his whole character arc, which revolves around his being a Lannister. Uh, but he's STILL a Lannister -- Joanna is Tywin's cousin. She didn't even need to change her name, LOL. And Jaime and Cersei are still his brother and sister. Even Tywin is still his blood, he's just not his real father. How beautifully tragic for Tyrion to discover that his father, for whom he has carried around so much resentment and actually KILLED, was not really his father after all. That just feels like typical Tyrion luck, does it not? LOL. No, instead, his real father was a mad tyrant whom his (half)brother slew to protect his fake father. Perhaps it's just me, but I find that terribly compelling. And it's not like this revelation would make Tyrion feel better about things, but discovering that Dany is his half-sister would definitely support the whole Tyrion Rides A Dragon theory too, wouldn't it?
And yes, if Tyrion is really Aerys's son, then that makes him Jon's uncle, making that little tete-a-tete between them in AGoT have some actual meaning, LOL.

I know most of us are waiting for that moment when Jon finds out Ned isn't his father, which in a way, I suspect would be a disappointment to him. He wants to be like Ned SO MUCH. He wants to be recognized as Ned's son, not just his bastard, you know? Then, we have Tyrion, who would probably welcome the fact that Tywin isn't his real father, except that his real father is possibly much worse! Also, what a weird symmetry--Tyrion kills Jaime's dad, Jaime kills Tyrion's real father. It would be just awful but make for a really good story at the same time. It would also resolve the question, maybe, of why Martin had Tyrion go to the Wall with Jon. I know during Tyrion's journey back to King's Landing, he gets captured by Catelyn, he meets Bronn, etc. All important plot points, but the connection with Jon would mean more if they were related. Also, what relation is Aemon to Jon if Jon is a Targaryean (he is)? A great uncle or something? Jon is overflowing with uncles. All he wants is a dad. . Anyway, I agree that having Dany as his half-sister makes his connection with her and her dragons easier to buy if that's where the plot is going, and I think it must be. Also, he can have the good sister, Dany, to oppose his bad sister, Cersei. I know people don't like the theory, but especially as I'm doing the reread, I think that's where GRRM is taking us.
