I admit to not knowing the secret codes that fans of GRRM apparently all know, but why does his changing his icon to Mr. Toad from The Wind in the Willows suggest important news will be coming.
Dare I be hopeful?
Because I really want to be.

Apparently, in the past, he's often used that icon when he was being cheeky or secretive or about to announce something. I've been told he used it a lot in the past when announcing new castmembers on the show. In this post in particular, he was hinting that he would have "more to say" about this past year after the new year, so people are freaking out expecting a TWOW release date announcement.
I'm thinking he might be gearing up to tear GoT a new one and announcing that he's washing his hands of the show. LOL. Either scenario is all right by me!!!

Wouldn't the best way to call out GOT is to publish the NEW BOOK ALREADY!! Show it to them George! Show them how it ought to be done!
He has good taste by the way. Mr. Toad is a great character -- is he about to take us on a wild ride? (pleasepleasepleaseplease)

Heehee! Well, I mean, if he WAS gonna announced the release date, he sort of missed his chance for a good "punch". I thought for sure he would announce on Dec. 22, which was the official first day of winter. A picture of a white raven with a date underneath it. BAM. That would have been epic. He kinda screwed the pooch on this one, which is why I have migrated to the disgruntled/impatient/cynical faction. This is a man who KNOWS how to do a flourish, and he blew it. Why announce after the new year when he coulda just done it last week and had it be way cooler?? So, I'm no longer as optimistic as I was before, and I personally don't think his New Year's post will be a release date. At the very least, though, he will hopefully give us SOME sort of update. I.E. will it be out before S6 as planned, or later in the year?

Let's think about this...Joffrey married Marg on New Years Day, which is the day Sansa left Kings Landing... So maybe in a grand flourish GRRM severs ties with HBO on New Years Day?

THAT would be almost as good as a release date, tbh!

I think that's the best thing he could do, given the circumstances. They have catched up wit the books and there's nothing he can do about it now so he'd better part ways and let them finish the story however they like. The problem is that they know details about the ending and the show will spoil the books to some extent, but in my view, it's better to let them go on their own way.
This is a disaster whatever happens, I think It's a bad idea to sell the rights to turn into television a series that is not finished.

I honestly think GRRM thought he'd be able to keep pace... Or at the very least he believed that D&D would keep pace with him. I mean, there is NO REASON that D&D needed to speed through AFFC/ADWD by cramming 2 books (badly) into Season 5. They spent 2 seasons on ASOS alone, why couldn't they have given the same amount of time and care with AFFC & ADWD? Because they WANTED to surpass the books. They have openly declared that they are tired of book-readers already knowing what's going to happen (which is, like, the most inane thing someone adapting a book to a TV series could possibly say), so they raced through books 4 & 5 so that they could "beat" GRRM.
But it doesn't matter anyway, because no matter what ends up on our screens in April, it will NOT be ASOIAF. The only thing D&D are going to spoil about the books is its integrity.

In a reply to one of the comments on this post, GRRM hinted that he might be posting an end-of-the-year writing update tomorrow, so keep your eyes peeled for that I guess, LOL. ;-)

I read an article that said it could be released in April. It was in Spanish and they said he talked about that in a covention in Santa Fe, where he lives.

I'm with sillierthings, if he hasn't announced it by now, then the odds for a pre-S6 release seem very unlikely. I was so optimistic! I've basically become Sansa where TWOW is concerned -- once a sweet summer child and now mistrustful of everyone and everything, LOL.

I'm following his periodic updates, and he is the worst tease ever. I just need to hear the news...for good or for ill.

Yes, if this blog binge doesn't end with some sort of concrete news about TWOW.... Guys, this is exactly why I often have doubts about SanSan.

Oh...don't. For my rock solid belief in Sansan is shaky right now
